How to Write Content for Your Podcast
Podcast content writing is a beautiful mix of scientific methodology and artistic creativity. Using the following 5 steps, you can write the best possible show intro (what you say at the beginning of each episode) and show description (what people read before tapping into your show). Let’s go!
Step 1) Answer a Few Questions
When writing the story of your podcast, it can be helpful to answer the 5 W’s: Who is your podcast for, What will they gain, When will they hear new episodes, Where can they find the show, and most importantly, Why should I listen now rather than later! By covering these 5 questions, you’ll have the bedrock of your podcast content.
Step 2) Research
Now that you know what you are writing about, it’s time to find out how the greatest podcasters work their magic. Identify which genre your podcast lands in (e.g. Comedy, Health, Video Games, etc.) and look up the top 3 podcasts in that genre. Note how each of these top podcasts has written their 5 W’s. How do they format their sentences?
Step 3) Draft Samples
You may find yourself rolling over laughing or seething in a pit of jealousy when you read top podcast’s well-crafted wording. Do not stress about getting your show intro or show description perfect the first time. Draft three to five sample intro’s and descriptions using the information from Step 1 and the formatting found in Step 2.
Step 4) Audience Testing
It can feel intimidating to ask your friends and family to review your content. What if they it’s too long? What if they say it’s confusing? What if they just don’t like it? If asking for help from the folks you know is just too much, skip on over to social media and put up a poll asking viewers to choose - or better yet rank - their favorite option from your sample intro and description.
Step 5) Launch and Learn
So… I have wild news for you - you just ideated, researched, and test your first pieces of podcast content writing! That last step is to launch your words into the world and learn from folks’ responses. Whatever comes next, you are walking away with the tools necessary to build the podcast of your dreams.
